Your Opinion, Please

(I am following my lovely younger sister, Heather in doing the same exactly named blog entry. I really like to read her friends and families opinions, so I will copy, unless I hear back from Heather to stop.)

Ok, now for your opinion: how much TV/computer/game cube/wii, etc. per day should children really watch/do a day? Truthfully. Really. Then how much do yours actually watch (truthfully, really)?

Ooo, I get controversial right at the start. I am scary...

I shall save my opinion, of which I have strong ideals, and miserable realities, until the end of your commenting.-Leesha

I kid you not- this was going to be my next question! Great minds think alike! I'm glad you're copying- it makes me feel good. I'll answer here and then ask my blog-buddies as well later on in the week.

Ava views about 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours a day (unless you count the Olympics which would send us way over those figures). I view or play games for about the same amount- except on Friday's when Trever and I play Rockband or watch a movie.

I would hope that my teenagers will no more than double those figures per day, but I really have no idea what the reality will be until we reach that point.

Summer or during school? When I'm at work or when I'm at home? When they are at work with me? During "rest" time last year with Jaredd while the rest of the kids were at school?

Amy actually spends very little time during the school year with any electronics(except her computer which doesn't have any games and does not have internet access. She is just too busy. The boys seem to find a lot more time after school, except on work/dance days. Then the child that is not at class at that time watches TV (PBS or a movie from home) while he finishes his homework. At night they like Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. They don't usually watch anything else, since we don't have anything but an antenna and I won't let them watch most programs.
Summer is really a free for all though. They get away with a lot more (5+ hours some days). And when we were on vacation at their Grandma V.'s I actually banned them from the Disney Channel for a day and a half.
Should they watch/play less? Definately. Will anything really change around here in the near future? Doubt it.

I've been thinking about what my comment should be for the past week. Controversial, indeed. It hits a sore nerve for me. In my ideal world, I'd like my children to have no more than 3 hours a day in front of an electronic entertainment device. However, I've discovered that if there is a project that I'd like to finish (like making dinner or quilting or blogging), it is a whole lot easier to put them in front of the tv/computer while I work. Somedays, the TV seems to be always on. Other days, I'm surprised at how few hours, if at all it is on.

Yesterday, the TV was on for 4.5 hours.
